Virginia Tech battles in 1-0 defeat to Pitt

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech put together a plethora of chances, but couldn’t finish the deal on Friday evening, as the Hokies fell to Pitt, 1-0.

The Hokies put five shots on target, a season-high for ACC contests. In return, the Panthers only put two shots on goal from nine shots total. That tally of nine shots was the second-fewest by Pitt all season.

Both sides went into the break scoreless with only one glaring opportunity. In the 23rd minute, Carter Hensley whipped in a fantastic ball into Declan Quill, who did well to make contact off the bounce. The Pitt keeper ultimately made a big save with an outstretched hand to deny Tech the opening goal. Four minutes later, Pitt had a chance at the back post that No. 19 sent over the bar.

In the second half, the Hokies continued to press forward with eight shots – three on target.

However, the breakthrough in the game came from Luis Sahmkow in the 59th minute. Pitt put a low-driven cross into the box that Sahmkow reached out to from point-blank range and converted.

NOTES
