Sun Devils Set to Host Utah Soccer on Friday


SALT LAKE CITY – The last time the University of Utah women’s soccer team took the field, they scored their most lopsided victory of the year, dominating Oregon State 6-0, and now the Utes will be attempting to take that momentum with them on the road, as they’ll travel south to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Sun Devil Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

Scouting Arizona State
The Sun Devils were undefeated through their first eight matches, posting a 6-0-2 mark, but a challenging stretch against Stanford, UCLA and USC ended with three straight defeats and ASU is attempting to regain their stride with six contests remaining.
 
Sixth-year coach Graham Winkworth can still call upon one of the most prolific goal scores in the conference in Nicole Douglas. The senior forward began the year by scoring nine times in her team’s first six fixtures, including a hat trick against Grambling on Sept. 14 and she’s currently tied for third in the Pac-12 in goals. The Sun Devils also have one of the conference leaders in assists in junior Lucy Johnson, who has passed out six helpers, putting her in a tie for second on the league leaderboard.
 
All Time Against Arizona State
The all-time series between Utah and ASU is all square in the form of a 6-6-3 record, but the Utes are 3-1-3 against the Sun Devils since 2015. That stretch includes a 1-0 Utah victory over then-No. 17 ASU in 2020 and a 2-0 road triumph in 2018. Prior to that, the Sun Devils had taken three-in-a-row, a streak that started with a 4-1 decision in 2012. The first time these programs locked horns was in 1997 for a match that ended in a 1-0 Ute victory.
 
Last Time Against Arizona State
This is the second consecutive season the Utes are traveling to Tempe and they’ll be attempting to erase the memory of a 4-1 defeat they suffered in Oct. of 2021.
