Mbappe definitely going to Liverpool but even he may not save Klopp after German’s biggest mistake

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool are definitely signing Kylian Mbappe. The money argument is ‘old news’ and he won’t mind mid-table. But can he save Jurgen Klopp?

You got a friend in me
Andy Dillon of The Sun was at the San Siro to watch Chelsea beat AC Milan. But he left fearing for the relationship between former teammates Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori:

‘Their friendship should survive but may be tested for a time as a result of a game-changing incident.’

Elsewhere, he adds:

‘Maybe frustration got the better of Tomori.’

It’s not like he lost it and stuck his studs on Mount’s knee in his best impression of Roy Keane on Alf-Inge Haaland, is it? He was slightly late to react to the Chelsea midfielder’s run so put his arm around his shoulder a couple of times to try and slow him down.

There might be a vague debate as to whether that was a penalty and a red card, but there probably isn’t a case to suggest it will ruin a friendship between two people who have known each other since they were children.

Fik’s ache
Adam Newson, Chelsea correspondent for Football.London, writes the following:

‘It was a harsh decision in truth and Seibert was surrounded by Milan players. A perplexed Tomori, meanwhile, gesticulated angrily before Mount offered his friend and former teammate a few understanding words and a pat on the back as he left the pitch.’

Such a shame to see them fall out like this.

The recent Kylian Mbappe developments mean a modern Mediawatch favourite can be resurrected: the nonsensical idea he might join Liverpool.

It has been rubbished on numerous occasions – including by Jurgen Klopp himself – but the Daily Mirror website care not for such whimsical concepts as financial viability.

‘Kylian Mbappe’s stance on Liverpool transfer as mum’s dream brought back into play’ is one headline, the URL slug to which is: kylian-mbappe-next-club-liverpool-28212525

Perfect.

Within the first paragraph we are told that the Mbappe news has ‘put Liverpool on red alert’. Anfield is then described as ‘now the player’s most likely destination’ and the fact his mum supports the Reds is said to be ‘a factor that will not do Klopp’s chances of luring him…any harm’.

What might do their chances some harm is the fact they are 10th and could well miss out on the Champions League. And that’s before even taking into account PSG’s valuation of Mbappe – just £263m-£306m for a club whose record signing stands at £85m or…
