Williams Provides Weekend Winner – Stanford University Athletics

STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Jasmine Aikey and junior Samantha Williams scored goals as No. 14 Stanford (11-2-1, 4-1-0 Pac-12) earned a 2-1 victory over No. 21 Washington State (8-3-2, 2-2-1 Pac-12) on Sunday from Cagan Stadium.

Aikey broke a scoreless match in the 28th minute when she unleashed a shot on a free kick from a few yards outside the box and bent it to the near post where WSU goalkeeper Nadia Cooper got a glove on it but could not keep it out of the goal.

The goal was Aikey’s second of the season – both coming on free kicks.

Washington State, which put four of its six shots in the match on frame, drew even in the 41st minute when Mykiaa Minniss volleyed a ball back across the front of the goal off a free kick where it hit off a Stanford defender and fell into the back of the net for an own goal.

Williams made the most of her one shot in 31 minutes played, running onto a pass from Lumi Kostmayer down the right side of the box, shaking a defender with a cut back to her left foot, and firing a laser past Cooper for the game-winner in the 76th minute.

For Williams, the goal was her fifth of the season. With the assist – her second of the season – Kostmayer now owns a team-high 20 points.

Stanford finished the match with a 22-6 advantage in shots, including putting 10 on frame and forcing Cooper into eight saves. Stanford also took 10 corner kicks compared to four from Washington State.
