LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Arizona soccer team fell in a close match to No. 1 UCLA on Sunday, posting a 1-0 loss.
With the loss, Arizona moves to 4-6-2 (1-4 Pac-12) on the season while UCLA moves to 13-0 (4-0 Pac-12).
Play got off to an even start with neither team taking a shot in the first 13 minutes of the match. UCLA got off its first shot in the 14th minute and added two more in under 60 seconds, but the Wildcats kept the Bruins’ attempts out of the goal.
A strong defensive effort by both teams in the first period kept the total number shots under 10 with Arizona taking three and UCLA posting six. Three of UCLA’s shots were on goal, but the Bruins were unable to get the ball past Hope Hisey.
The start of the second half saw a continuation of the defensive battle with UCLA attempting a shot in the 51st minute that was off-target. Nicole Dallin snuck the ball away from UCLA in the 53rd minute, taking the shot but just clipping the goal post.
Dallin got a second good look at the goal in the 69th minute, sending the ball past the defenders. UCLA goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy punched the ball out to keep Arizona off the board.
The Bruins got the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute when Sunshine Fontes was able to get a pass from Ally Cook past Hisey.
Arizona held UCLA to only nine shots in the competition, keeping the Bruins well below their season average of 19.2 shots per game. Seven members of the Arizona squad took a shot in the match.
