Manchester United are reportedly confident that Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at the club in January – but largely due to the fact that no team wants to sign him. 

The Portuguese superstar’s contract is up at the end of the season, and as such he would be free to talk to foreign clubs in January.

Sources have reportedly told ESPN that the club believe the 37-year-old will still be at Old Trafford by the end of the January window due to a lack of suitors.

It’s said the likelihood of an exit for the forward is further reduced by the fact that United have told Erik ten Hag that he is unlikely to be given any money to improve his squad until next summer.  

Ronaldo has had a torrid start to the campaign with United, scoring just once from 12 yards against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League and losing his starting berth in the side to Marcus Rashford.

This comes after a summer in which Ronaldo sent shockwaves through Europe by requesting a formal transfer away from the club. 

However, there was far less interest than a player of his calibre and reputation might have expected. 

Ronaldo’s decision was met with only one concrete offer, from Saudi Arabian outfit Al Hilal in a summer which saw the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid distance themselves from a potential move.
