SAN FRANCISCO – After helping spearhead a pair of wins for the Huskies, graduate student defender Shae Holmes has been named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.
It is the first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor of Holmes’ career. She becomes the first Husky to receive a weekly laurel from the league since Olivia Sekany was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Week in 2020.
Holmes scored the second goal of her career in Washington’s 3-2 win over Utah Thursday night, and did so in dramatic fashion. Just two minutes after the Utes leveled the score, Holmes netted the match winner in the 87th minute, scoring directly from a free kick from the right wing.
On Sunday, the Highlands Ranch, Colorado, native led the Huskies to another victory, limiting the high-powered Buffaloes offense to a single goal in a 4-1 Washington win. Once again Holmes was effective from a set piece delivery from the wing , setting up a Cori Sullivan goal en route to a dominant UW victory.
Sitting in a tie for third place in the Pac-12 table, Holmes and the Huskies hit the Bay Area for a pair of matches this week, taking on Stanford on Thursday and Cal on Sunday.
