Early Goal Gives Cougs Win, Shulenberger All-Time Wins Record

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women’s soccer team (8-1-2) defeated visiting Utah, 1-0, at Lower Soccer Field Sunday afternoon. With the victory, WSU Head Coach Todd Shulenberger became the school’s all-time wins leader with 89 career victories. Cougar senior Grayson Lynch netted the game-winning goal in the 9th minute, and secured Shulenberger’s place in history.
 
Just over eight minutes into the match, WSU found the game-winner when junior Margie Detrizio headed a ball on to sophomore Lindsey Turner. On her first touch, Turner delivered a perfectly weighted ball to the top of the Utah penalty area. The Utes’ goalkeeper came off her line to meet the ball, but a running Grayson Lynch was first to it, touching the ball past the Utah keeper, before finishing off-balance with her left foot.
 
The goal was Lynch’s fourth of the season and second game-winning goal of the year. Detrizio and Turner each earned an assist, Detrizio’s team-leading fifth assist, and Turner’s second assist as a Cougar.
 
WSU’s sophomore goalkeeper Nadia Cooper made a season-high five saves, including three outstretched saves to keep the Cougs ahead. In the 16th minute, Cooper was quick off her line to meet a surging Ute, making a kick save to maintain the lead.
