Cal Drops Tilt Against ASU

TEMPE, ARIZONA – California women’s soccer fell to Arizona State, 2-1, in a Pac-12 Conference road match on Thursday evening at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.  
 
The Bears took an early lead with their earliest goal of the season in the 11th minute. Cal got into the box and drew a handball on a shot. Keely Roy stepped up to the spot and scored her fifth goal of the year and her third penalty kick conversion as she calmly stepped to the spot and played the ball to her right after sending the keeper the wrong way.
 
ASU answered in the 22nd minute with a free kick goal from just outside the box by Alexia Delgado to tie the game at one.
 
The Bears controlled the opportunities and the possession in the second half. However, against the run of play, Eva van Deursen scored for Arizona State in the 73rd minute off a cross to give ASU the 2-1 lead.
 
Cal (5-3-3, 0-2-0) controlled many of the chances throughout the game with a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks. Arizona State (6-0-2, 2-0-0) capitalized on two chances, but the Bears had a 16-10 advantage on shots and a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
 
Angelina Anderson was called into action in the seventh minute as the Sun Devils got free down the right and Keri Matthews got in one-on-one with the Cal goalie, but Anderson came out, cut down the angle and made the save. The Bears responded with a great opportunity 30 seconds later as Karlie Lema got to the end line and played a cross to the left which found Mia Fontana. Fontana got around a defender…
