SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse men’s soccer travels to Blacksburg on Friday, Sept. 30 for a 6 p.m. conference clash with Virginia Tech. The match will be streaming live on ACCNX.

ORANGE UPDATE

‘Cuse is 7-1-1 (2-1-0 ACC) on the season and the No. 7 team in the United Soccer Coaches’ Poll. This is the best start to a season since 2016 and the first time the Orange spent consecutive weeks in the top-10 since 2017.

Syracuse lost 1-0 the last time out against Virginia. The Orange played 68 minutes with ten men after junior midfielder Jeorgio Kocevski was shown a second yellow card in the first half. The Cavaliers scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute. Sophomore midfielder Giona Leibold came close to equalizing in the 87th minute, but his shot flew just wide of the crossbar.

Nine different players were booked by the referee, as the teams committed a combined 27 fouls. Virginia out shot Syracuse 14-10 on the night. The Orange were shutout for the first time this season.

‘Cuse have allowed just three goals in nine games this season, which tied for first with Duke for the Atlantic Coast Conference lead. Syracuse leads the nation in team goals against average (.333) and are tied for the national lead in clean sheets kept with Western Michigan (6). Redshirt senior goalkeeper Russell Shealy’s .375 GAA is tied for second in the nation.

Newcomers Levonte Johnson and Nathan Opoku are tied for the team lead in goals (3), assists (4), and points (10).

SCOUTING THE HOKIES:

Virginia Tech is 1-7-1 (0-3-0 ACC) on the season. The Hokies are looking for their second home win of the season.

Mike Brizendine is in his 14th season as head coach. The McLean, Virginia native has a 101-125-38 record at Blacksburg.

The Hokies lost 3-1 in their midweek matchup against Davidson. Trey Grandier struck first for the Wildcats in the 13th minute, but Virginia Tech drew the score level in the 23rd minute with a goal from Danny Flores. A pair of goals from Denis

Krioutchenkov secured the three points for Davidson.

Flores’ leads the team in goals with three and points with eight. The California native is tied for the squad lead in assists (2) with Danny Pugh.

Virginia Tech has allowed 14 goals this season, which is the most in the ACC.
