'It's a Strange Season' - Ancelotti on Real Title Hopes After Perfect Start

Real Madrid may have had a perfect start to the new Spanish La Liga season but boss Carlo Ancelotti believes there will be many twists and turns in the title race.

Real collected three more points in Sunday’s 2-1 derby win over Atletico Madrid with goals coming from Rodrygo and Federico Valverde in the first half.

The win means Los Blancos have 18 points from six games to start the new season, sitting ahead of rivals Barcelona on 16, while 2021 Spanish champions Atleti are seventh on 10.

“Barcelona are doing really well and so are we,” Ancelotti said.

“Atletico haven’t had the best of starts, but it’s a strange season. We don’t know what will happen after the World Cup and what has happened to Atletico could happen to us or to Barcelona after the tournament.

“It’s going to be a more competitive league season than the previous one.”

Real’s strong start is all the more impressive considering they have been without last season’s top scorer Karim Benzema lately due to injury.

“The team has done well without Benzema in these games and all the players who have played in his position have done a good job,” Ancelotti said.

“Today it was Rodrygo, who scored a spectacular goal. There’s a lot of quality in this squad.”

The Italian also praised Valverde who has started the season with three goals after failing to score the whole 2021-22 league campaign.

“Rodrygo and Fede are very special because they are what the modern footballer has to be now, play in different positions, with physical attributes and technique,” he said.

“Both of them have progressed a lot and were delighted as they’re doing very well.”
