Tammy Abraham admits leaving Chelsea for Roma was “difficult” and has now set his sights on becoming one of the best strikers in the world.
The England international has been brilliant for the Serie A side since moving to Rome from west London in August 2021.
Abraham scored 27 goals in 53 matches for Roma last season with 17 of those coming in Serie A and he’s fast become a crowd favourite at the Stadio Olimpico.
Erling Haaland has showed all forwards in world football the way forward with 14 goals in his first ten competitive appearances for Manchester City this season, which takes his career total to 169 goals in 210 matches.
And Abraham says he is hoping to replicate Haaland’s amazing goalscoring form with other players’ success motivating the Roma star.
Speaking to former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, Abraham told the Daily Mail: “There is something in me saying I want to do even better. As a character, that’s how I thrive. I look at Erling Haaland who is the most talked-about player in the world right now.
“I use it as a secret motivation, to try to reach that level, hit those targets. Other players’ success, that is what gets me going.”
It became clear that he wouldn’t necessarily be first choice at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel in 2021 and Abraham made the “difficult ” decision to leave the Blues.
Abraham added: “If you’d told me a couple of years ago I’d be playing in Italy, I wouldn’t have believed you. Leaving Chelsea was difficult, it’s where I’d grown up from the age of seven.
“I didn’t know much about Italian football but it has helped me develop as a player and as a man. I’ve come out of my comfort zone and don’t have any regrets. I love the life and it’s brought out another side to my game.
“At Chelsea, I was viewed purely as a goalscorer. Here, I’ve learned different aspects of the game. If our opponents have more of the ball, I know how to position myself defensively. You have to be more clinical finishing chances because they can be limited.”
Harry Kane remains first choice for England at international level and Abraham is happy to learn off the Tottenham striker.
