No. 8 Terps Top Michigan 2-1 In Big Ten Opener

ANN ARBOR, MI — Stefan Copetti’s first goal in a Maryland uniform proved to be the decisive goal and the No. 8 Terps (4-1-1) defeated Michigan 2-1 in their first Big Ten action of the season.

After heading into halftime knotted at one apiece, the Terps took complete control of the final 45 minutes. They put up shot after shot until Coppeti’s knock finally went through the net after two prior attempts by the Marist transfer.

Michigan out-shot the Terps 10-4 in the first period, but Maryland responded with an 11-5 shooting margin in the second.

With the win, Maryland won its third consecutive match this season as well as its third consecutive match against the Wolverines.

Luca Costabile (LB), Chris Rindov (LCB), William Kulvik (RCB), Nick Richardson (RB)

Malcolm Johnston (MF), Joe Suchecki (MF), Alex Nitzl (MF)

Breaking Down The Action

  • Michigan was on the attack early but Chris Rindov and Jamie Lowell each made good defensive stops to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Terps struck first off a set piece in the 30th minute as Hunter George booted the ball in the air and Rindov out jumped everyone for the beautiful header into the back of the net.
  • Michigan equalized just over two minutes later off a Maryland giveaway in the back.
  • Lowell made a massive save on a Wolverine breakaway with the half winding down, his third to that point.
  • The Terps came out of the locker room aggressively after halftime and registered the first nine shots of the second half.
  • Maryland eventually broke through as Michigan’s goalkeeper Hayden Evans bobbled a well-struck shot by George and Coppeti was there to tap the ball in and finish the job.
  • The Terp defense kept Michigan in check for the remainder of play. Lowell finished with a season-high five saves.

Up Next

  • The Terps will host Penn State on Tuesday at 7 pm at Ludwig Field.
