PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women’s soccer team (5-1-1) defeated Northern Colorado, 6-0, Thursday night at Lower Soccer Field. Junior Margie Detrizio led the Cougars with two goals, while seniors MacKenzie Frimpong-Ellertson and Bridget Rieken each tallied their first goals of the season.

Entering the 11th minute, junior Jenna Studer played a ball down the right flank for Frimpong-Ellertson to run onto. Frimpong-Ellertson played a floating cross into the near post where Detrizio managed to get her right foot to the ball and play a lobbed shot over an outstretched UNC goalkeeper and into the upper-right corner. It was Detrizio’s fifth goal of the season and gave the Cougs an early 1-0 lead.

In the 22nd minute, Frimpong-Ellertson found herself near the endline once more, and put in a dangerous cross to the Bears’ goalmouth, where a sliding UNC defender misplayed the ball into the back of the net and doubled the Cougars’ lead.

Less than a minute after taking the 2-0 lead, WSU was back in the attacking third. Frimpong-Ellertson collected a pass at the top right edge of the box, dribbled through a pair of defenders and ripped a shot from a tight angle at the edge of the 6-yard box. The shot went across the face of goal untouched, ricocheted off the left post, and into the back of the net for Frimpong-Ellertson’s first goal of the season.

Before the halftime whistle, Wazzu added a fourth goal. Brianna McReynolds served in a corner for the Cougs, placing an inswinging ball to the near post. Bridget Rieken made a run to the area, applying pressure, and forced Northern Colorado into their second own goal of the evening off a defender’s head. WSU entered the half leading 4-0.

Returning from the break, Detrizio would add a second goal in the 63rd minute, when senior Sydney Studer got her head to a long cross, playing the ball back across goal. UNC’s defense only cleared the ball as far as the edge of the box, where Detrizio collected, looked up, and slotted her sixth goal of the season into the bottom left corner.

WSU’s Rieken would cap the night with her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Junior Alyssa Gray stood over a free kick on the left sideline and delivered a perfectly-weighted cross to the far post, where Rieken put a glancing header back across the goal mouth and into the bottom left…
