Scholes claims Man Utd star ‘deserves’ England spot over Grealish; admits he’s ‘surprised’ by Casemiro

Scholes praises Sancho, Casemiro

Paul Scholes has argued that Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho currently “deserves” a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad over Jack Grealish.

Long-term target Sancho completed his move to Man Utd last summer from Borussia Dortmund for around £73m.

The Englishman was among quite a few United players who struggled last season as they floundered down in sixth in the Premier League.

Manchester United waste little energy on Sheriff ahead of another fortnight off

Sancho has been afforded a fresh start this season under United’s new manager Erik ten Hag. He has made the most of this so far as he has scored three goals in eight appearances.

His latest goal came on Thursday night as Man Utd beat Sheriff 2-0 in the Europa League group stages.

Despite his improved form, Sancho still missed out on a place in Southgate’s squad for Nations League games against Germany and Italy later this month.

But Scholes has argued that Sancho should have been included ahead of Man City star Grealish.

The £100m man is yet to score or provide an assist in five outings this term as he is struggling to find his feet at the Etihad.

“I think he probably deserves to be in over Jack Grealish at the minute.

“He scored a good goal against Liverpool and showed signs tonight. He’s better when he’s coming inside and linking play.

“He doesn’t have that electrifying pace to go past someone on the outside or on the inside. When he was good at Dortmund, he had [Erling] Haaland, [Achraf] Hakimi – he always had someone to link with.

“At Manchester United, if he can link with Fernandes or Eriksen, who are clever players to link with, he could be a good player for Man United.”

Summer signing Casemiro was brought on at half-time against Sheriff, as Scott McTominay made way.

The £60m ex-Real Madrid midfielder is being eased into the fold by Ten Hag as he has so far made three substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Scholes already likes what he has seen from Casemiro though:

“His awareness, I love this pass around the corner. He surprised me a little bit with his forward passing, his range of passing, I thought he was more of a winner, getting the ball back in midfield,” Scholes added.

“It was Kroos and Modric last year, he has more to his game and showed more of a range to his…
