Cardinals Open ACC Play with Miami


LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After going unbeaten in five of six games during non-conference play, the University of Louisville women’s soccer team is set to open conference play this weekend. The Cardinals are set to host Miami Saturday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.

The Cardinals had success in the non-conference as they just lost one of the six games they played. Heading into conference play, the Cardinals are on a four-game unbeaten streak. Of the six games, the Cardinals have posted shutouts in four games and allowed just four goals overall this season.

Freshman defender Karsyn Cherry leads the team so far with three goals and is second on the team with six points. Graduate student Maisie Whitsett has assisted on two of Cherry’s three goals this season and she leads the squad with three assists and seven points. Freshman Erynn Floyd has seen a majority of time in net and has started in each of the four shutouts for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have won three of their last four ACC openers, dating back to the 2018 season. Louisville defeated Miami the past two seasons to begin ACC play and knocked off Pitt in the ACC opener back in 2018. Over the past four seasons the Cardinals have had success in the month of September with a 15-6-3 (.688) record during that time.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES

Miami finished the 2021 season with a 4-12 record and went 1-9 in ACC play. So far this season, the Hurricanes are 3-1-2 overall, the best start to a season for the Canes since 2015. Four different players lead the Hurricanes in goals with Lauren Meeks, Mikayla Tupper, Jackie Koerwitz and Megan Morgan all having one goal so far this season. Emma Pidding leads the team with two assists and Melissa Dagenais leads the Hurricanes in net with 27 saves and a .900 save percentage this season.

SERIES HISTORY 

The Cardinals lead the all-time series between the two schools 6-1-1 and are a perfect 3-0 at home against the Hurricanes. Last season the two schools played in Coral Gables and the Cardinals came away with a 3-2 win in double overtime. After facing a two-goal deficit at halftime, the Cardinals scored the final three goals of the game with Maisie Whitsett securing the game-winning goal in the 105th minute.
