Premier League

Every Premier League club’s highest-rated player of the season so far…

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus.

Liverpool’s highest-rating performer was almost sold in the summer and it’s an encouraging list for Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup…

Here’s every side’s best player so far according to WhoScored’s ratings…

Arsenal: Gabriel Jesus – 7.75
Three goals and three assists in his first five games for the Gunners have made him a hero already at the Emirates. Still, he has missed out on the latest Brazil squad but that could be because his place is secure and Tite wants a gander at those on the periphery. Gabriel Martinelli is Arsenal’s second-highest rating player, but his omission from the Brazil squad is rather more concerning ahead of the World Cup.

Aston Villa: Emiliano Martinez – 6.97
The Villa stopper is 13th of the Premier League keepers for saves percentage, but he has kept out 1.1 goals fewer than the Villans’ xGC.

Bournemouth: Lloyd Kelly – 6.87
Not only is Kelly the highest-rated Cherry, he also had the good sense to sit out the trip to Liverpool. The two things are probably linked.

Brentford: Ivan Toney – 7.76
The Brentford striker is making a late dash for the England plane ahead of the World Cup. Thomas Frank reckons he should go, if only because he’s “the best in the world” from the spot.

Brighton: Pascal Gross – 7.36
“Pascal is probably performing at the level of his career; certainly his level since I’ve been working with him,” said Graham Potter shortly before he chose to stop working with him. Gross has already bettered his goal tally from last season and is averaging 2.3 key passes per game.

Chelsea: Reece James – 7.29
While Trent Alexander-Arnold has flailed, like many of his Liverpool team-mates, James has had a strong start to the season, earning a fat new contract along the way. James is currently on a single assist – of his team-mates, only Marc Cucurella has more than one so far this season.

Crystal Palace: Wilfried Zaha – 7.36
Zaha has scored four of Palace’s five goals this season, form he will have to maintain if he hopes to finally get his big move in January. Unsurprisingly, he was named Palace’s Player of the Month for August and nominated for the Premier League award.

Everton: Jordan Pickford – 7.26
Pickford performed heroics against Liverpool but his form has been solid all season, which is convenient timing ahead of the World Cup. Less convenient is the thigh injury he suffered, though he may be back by the time Everton next play if next weekend’s…
