Chris Sutton has told Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou not to “jump at the first opportunity” to manage in the Premier League with Brighton reportedly interested in his services.
The Seagulls are without a boss after Graham Potter left to become Chelsea head coach following Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal.
Albion lost several of Potter’s coaching staff as well, who have followed him to Stamford Bridge.
A bunch of managers have been linked with the vacant position at the AMEX.
Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is in the mix, while FK Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen is currently the bookies’ favourite.
Postecoglou has also been linked given the tremendous job he has done north of the border.
His odds have gone up, however, after The Athletic revealed Brighton’s four-man shortlist did not include the Australian manager.
Instead, Albion are looking at Knutsen, Cooper, Swansea’s Russell Martin and Luton Town’s Nathan Jones.
Celtic lost Brendan Rodgers to the Premier League when he joined Leicester City in 2019, and Steven Gerrard left Rangers last year to take over at Aston Villa.
And the club’s supporters will be gutted to see Postecoglou go.
The former Australia manager took over at Celtic Park last summer and won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup at the first time of asking.
The Hoops’ title win took them straight into the Champions League group stage, where they face RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk and some small team from Spain named Real Madrid.
Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton reckons a move to Brighton from Celtic would be a “step down” for Postecoglou.
Sutton insists Cetlic are “far bigger than the majority” of Premier League teams, backing Postecoglou to take over one of the ‘Big Six’ clubs in England’s top flight.
“If you back yourself, you are going to be selective and not jump at the first opportunity that comes your way,” he wrote in his Daily Record column.
“The Premier League is regarded by many as the best league in the world.
“But Celtic are far bigger than the majority of teams who operate within England’s top flight and that is a fact.
“Like I’ve said, no disrespect to Brighton, but Celtic are miles ahead of them.
“I can’t see a coach of Postecoglou’s quality stepping down the ladder to go to England’s south coast.
