Matthew Roop is in his first season as a volunteer coach with the Ohio State Men’s Soccer program in 2022 after spending the last two years at the University of Illinois earning a master’s degree in recreation, sport, and tourism while serving as the Premium Seating Graduate Assistant and as an Illinois Soccer Manager. 

Roop graduated Summa Cum Laude from Manchester College with a bachelor’s degree in both marketing and sport management (2019) along with a minor in sales.

He earned the Director’s Award as a senior, which goes to the athlete with the highest GPA at Manchester. He also earned the Eikenberry Award which goes to the top senior student in the Gilbert School of Business.

While at Manchester, Roop was a four-year starter and three-year captain on the soccer team. He was a two-year Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference all-league honoree and the team MVP as a senior year. His class was the winningest in school history.

After graduation he coached club soccer at the Fort Wayne Sport Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for two seasons.
