Cardinal Cruises Past Mustangs – Stanford University Athletics

STANFORD, Calif. – Four different Cardinal players scored a goal as No. 12 Stanford (5-0-0) cruised to a 4-1 victory over Cal Poly (2-3-0) on Sunday afternoon from Cagan Stadium.

Stanford peppered the Mustang goal with shots, delivering a season-high 38 and forcing Cal Poly goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel into 13 saves.

Senior Maya Doms led the attack with nine shots, including four on goal, while 15 different Cardinal managed at least one chance.

Abby Greubel got the scoring started in the 12th minute when she received a pass from Doms and chipped a shot over Samuel’s head and into the top corner of the net for her second of the season. The goal was the 14th of Greubel’s career.

The Cardinal added to the lead in the 41st minute when freshman centerback Elise Evans came forward for a corner kick and stayed in the box as the corner was initially cleared from danger. Senior Katie Duong was at the top of the 18 and promptly re-inserted the ball in the box where it found Evans’ head and she flicked the ball backward into the corner of the net for her first career goal.

Stanford managed 21 shots, forcing Samuel into nine saves, in the first half while holding Cal Poly without a shot through the first 45 minutes.

The offensive pressure continued into the second half as freshman Jasmine Aikey dribbled into the box in the 61st minute only to be taken down and awarded a penalty kick.
