Arteta Laments VAR Call, Ten Hag Praises Debutant Antony

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has lamented the “lack of consistency” from the VAR after his side were denied a goal in Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford netted a double for the Red Devils, while debutant Antony got on the scoresheet.

Arsenal had thought they’d opened the scoring in the 12th minute but VAR ruled out Gabriel Martinelli’s strike, citing a foul on Christian Eriksen in the lead-up.

Bukayo Saka got Arsenal’s equaliser on the hour mark, but United pulled away with two goals in the final 25 minutes.

“It’s a lack of consistency,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “What is soft? Last week, they (Aston Villa) got a goal when there’s a foul on Aaron (Ramsdale), but it’s soft and it’s not a foul.

“Then there’s a penalty on Bukayo (by Tyrone Mings) but it’s soft and not a penalty. Today this is a foul.

“There were some strong tackles and no yellow cards because the threshold is low because it’s a big game. It’s really difficult to accept.”

Arteta also blamed his side’s lack of discipline in the defeat.

“We have to learn from that,” he said.

“We lacked the discipline that is necessary in certain areas of the pitch against these world-class players to prevent certain spaces, because overall when you look at the performance and the way we played, obviously the result should’ve been very, very different.”

Meanwhile, United boss Erik ten Hag was full of praise for Antony, who dazzled the Old Traford crowd on his debut.

“I think we have already seen what a threat he is,” the Dutchman said. “Speed and creativity are a real threat in the Premier League. And he is a part of it.

“And I think we missed a player on the right wing because all the players that can play there like Jadon Sancho, like Marcus Rashford, prefer more the centre or the left side.

“Now, we have the one who can play really good over the right wing, so there was a missing link. Now, today’s first performance here, he did well, but he can step up. I know him from Amsterdam.

“I know this is a different league, but there is potential and he will get that. He will be even better than he was today. But I would say today already, it was a great goal. Although, I must mention all the goals today were team goals.
