No. 8 Nittany Lions Fall at No. 12 Stanford

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The No. 8 Penn State women’s soccer team fell 2-0 at No. 12 Stanford on Thursday night.
 
The Nittany Lions put up a solid fight as the PSU defense held the Cardinal to its lowest goal total this season. Penn State put up the most shots of a Stanford opponent this season with eight.
 
Redshirt senior Katherine Asman made a season-high nine saves in the match.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Asman prevented an early goal in the fourth minute as the Cardinal sent in a corner cross with a bicycle attempt that was saved by the redshirt senior in the bottom right of the goal.
 
The 14^th minute saw Kate Wiesner take Penn State’s first shot and only shot of the first half, but it was blocked by Stanford’s junior goalie, Ryan Campbell.
 
The Cardinal kept knocking on the door and found the back of the net in the 38^th minute, their latest goal of the season, for the 1-0 advantage.
 
Out of the break, PSU had its second corner opportunity, but the header went outside for a goal kick. Shortly thereafter, Stanford connected for their second score of the match in the 56^th minute. 
 
After the resulting kickoff, junior Natalie Wilson took PSU’s second shot of game, but it was blocked and resulted in a corner. Off the set piece opportunity came a header by Schlegel only to be saved by Stanford. Penn State’s next two chances were wrapped up by the Cardinal keeper.
 
In the 67^th minute, senior Cori Dyke made a goal saving tackle causing a shot to go off target, and the 74^thminute saw Asman poke away back-to-back attempts from Stanford.
