Everton ‘close to signing’ £15m Man Utd midfielder as ex-player ‘undergoes medical tests’

Everton to sign Garner

Everton have reportedly ‘won the race’ to sign James Garner from Manchester United as the transfer is now ‘close’ to being completed.

The Toffees certainly are in need of new signings before the summer window closes on Thursday night.

Frank Lampard’s side are without a win in their first five games of the 2022/23 campaign, though they have drawn 1-1 three times in a row against Nottm Forest, Brentford and Leeds United.

Everton might lack quality but there’s no shortage of bollocks missing in March

Amadou Onana, Dwight McNeil and Neal Maupay have all joined Everton for fees this summer. James Tarkowski (free), Conor Coady (loan) and Ruben Vinagre (loan) have also been brought in.

Everton are now ‘close to signing’ Garner from Man Utd, according to The Athletic.

The centre-midfielder had a stellar spell on loan at Nottingham Forest last term and the newly-promoted side have been among the clubs interested in the Man Utd starlet.

The Athletic state that Leicester City and Southampton were also keen but Everton have now ‘won the race’ to sign him.

The fee for the England under-21 international will be £15m including add-ons and Everton are ‘hopeful’ of completing the deal.

It had been stated that Chelsea are ‘prepared’ to pay £60m to get him. But after scoring in two straight games, Gordon’s valuation may have gone up even further.

Speaking after Everton’s draw against Leeds on Tuesday night, Lampard stated that he is “very confident” about keeping Gordon:

“I’m very confident. You’ve seen the reasons why in the last two games because he’s our player. He’s a very good player and he’s going to get better.

“Anthony’s too important a player. I think he’s shown his worth in the last two games.

“With two days (of the transfer window) to go, what good would it do us to do anything with Anthony?”

Everton are not done there though as Idrissa Gueye is set to return to the club. He previously played 108 times for the Toffees between 2016 and 2019.

PSG spent around £30m to sign him ahead of the 2019/20 campaign but his comeback to Everton is now edging closer.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Wednesday morning that the 32-year-old is ‘undergoing medical tests’ at Everton.

He adds that ‘final steps need’ to be ironed out before Gueye is…
