Chelsea submit ‘official €90m proposal’ to sign Bundesliga star

Chelsea target Gvardiol

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Chelsea have submitted an ‘official €90m proposal’ to sign RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Well, well, well. This one has come out of nowhere.

Chelsea have already spent big to sign Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly this summer to strengthen their defence. Raheem Sterling has also joined the club for a significant fee.

Signing one more centre-back has been a priority for Chelsea in recent weeks. They look to have got their wish as Wesley Fofana’s move to Stamford Bridge will be announced in the coming days.

The Blues are also being linked with Anthony Gordon and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but those deals now look less likely to be completed.

Before Romano reported on Gvardiol’s move to Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel admitted that they “need some more players”:

“Right now I think we could need some more players in some positions, but it’s very close to the end of the transfer window and when September 1 comes, I will be a happy coach no matter what happens,” Tuchel told reporters on Monday afternoon.

“I will try to find solutions and not think about what might have happened or what could be.

“Everything that matters is reality and at the moment (against Leicester) what mattered was finding a way to win.

“What will matter at Southampton is the same, find a way to win, step up individually and push the team from my side. This is what we will do no matter if players will come or not.”

Gvardiol signed for RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb last summer and he quickly established himself as a regular for the German side.

The 20-year-old played 46 times across all competitions last season and he is now an important player for Croatia.

Given the impact that he made in 2021/22, it comes as no surprise that clubs around Europe are admirers of him.

Manchester City and Manchester United have both been linked with him but Chelsea now appear to have won the race for his signature.

Romano is reporting that Chelsea are now in ‘advanced talks’ with RB Leipzig over the transfer.

Negotiations are ‘ongoing’ between the two clubs and Chelsea have already submitted an offer worth €90m.

If this deal is completed, Chelsea would have to wait to see him in action at Stamford Bridge as he would be loaned back to Leipzig until June 2023.
