Binghamton

EAST LANSING, Mich. – On the back of a 29-2 shot differential, the Michigan State women’s soccer team rolled in its home opener under the lights at DeMartin Stadium on Thursday night, capping off a 7-0 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas. Michigan State’s seven goals scored marked the highest scoring output by the Spartans since a 7-0 demolition of Purdue Fort Wayne on Sept. 19, 2001.

MSU moves to 2-0-1 on the season and has yet to surrender a goal through three matches, equaling the team’s defensive start from one season ago. Central Michigan falls to 0-3 overall this year. The Spartans placed a whopping 14 shots on goal, without surrendering a single accurate attempt on the other end. Michigan State ended the game with nine corner kicks and allowed only one from the Chippewa side. In the box score, six Spartans were credited with goals highlighted by freshman forward Courtney Koehler’s twin scores in the sixth and 66th minutes, respectively.

The Green & White absolutely dominated the opening 45 minutes of play, with MSU outshooting the Chippewas by a remarkable 17-0 margin. Koehler opened the scoring in the sixth minute, with graduate forward Camryn Evans breaking away from a Chippewa defender and placing a perfect pass on the money that led to the icebreaker. Four minutes later, Evans secured her own score to put the Spartans ahead 2-0 with an assist credited to graduate defender Ruby Diodati.
