Chelsea paying for Fofana mistake they made ‘years ago’ in ‘best’ transfer window, says Johnson

Reported Chelsea target Wesley Fofana during a warm-up

Glen Johnson says Chelsea should “bought Wesely Fofana years ago” but believes Thomas Tuchel would have the best defence in the Premier League if he joins.

Chelsea have seen bids of £50m, £60m and £70m for Fofana rejected by Leicester, who are said to be holding out for £80m.

The 21-year-old – who is desperate to join Tuchel’s side – has ben jettisoned to the U23s by Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers while doubt over his future remains.

Johnson says Chelsea should have landed the defender “years ago” and is “surprised he’s been at Leicester this long”. He’s been there for less than two years, Glen.

“It does possibly make Chelsea’s defence the strongest in the Premier League on paper. You’d have experience and youth as well as three athletes, so you’d struggle to get better than that,” Johnson told Betting Odds.

“Chelsea should have bought Fofana years ago. I’m surprised he’s been at Leicester this long because a few years ago he was one of the best defenders around and he couldn’t even get in the French team.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. They could have got him for relatively cheap a few years ago but now they’re going to have to pay double now.”

Fofana would be Chelsea’s seventh signing of the summer, following Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Gabriel Slonina in moving to Stamford Bridge.

And Johnson believes that with that business, Chelsea have had the best window this summer…

“I’d say Chelsea have had the best. Kalidou Koulibaly looks brilliant; he’s going to help them out massively. Raheem Sterling is a great signing and they have big hopes for Marc Cucurella at left-back,” he added.

“I can’t think of anyone else that has signed three big players like that. I would have liked Rüdiger to stay. I think that was a bit of a mistake and he would have had a good partnership with Koulibaly.

“He’s probably the only player I would have kept from the players they’ve sold this summer, so overall I think they’ve done good business.”

As well as Fofana, Chelsea are thought to be closing in on a deal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who waved goodbye to the Barcelona fans on Wednesday, while they are still locked in talks with Everton over Anthony Gordon, who will cost them £60m if he is to move to Stamford Bridge.
