COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes opened the 2022 season, the 70th for the Ohio State Men’ s Soccer Program, with a 1-all draw vs. South Carolina Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the first day of the 16th Wolstein Classic.

The game between the Buckeyes and Gamecocks followed the event opener between Dayton and Cal Poly. The Flyers won that game, 5-0.

How it Happened

Chris Dowling, playing in his 13th game as a Buckeyes, scored in the 16′  to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Dowling took a pass from Xavier Green and put it away in the bottom right of the net. It was Green’s fourth career assist.

South Carolina knotted the game at 1-all in the 51′ on a goal by Harrison Myring, who took a pass from John Eskay for the equalizer.

Notes

  • Buckeyes who saw their first action at Ohio State: Freshmen Tanner Creech, Ashton Bilow and Luciano Pechota. Creech earned his first career start.
  • Admission and parking to Ohio State Soccer matchers are free. There will be T-Shirt giveaway at the Ohio State game Sunday.
  • This is Year 16 for the Wolstein Classic in Columbus. The event was first played in 2006 and since then, Ohio State is 16-8-7. Ohio State will play Cal Poly at 6 p.m. Sunday in the final game of the tournament.
  • Ohio State is 29-29-12 all-time in season openers. When Ohio State opens the season at home, the Buckeyes are 21-13-7. Ohio State is 36-26-8 in the first home game of the season.
  • Ohio State holds a 124-67-33 record in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium since the facility opened in 1999. All-time, Ohio State is 276-195-66 at home.
  • Seniors Xavier Green and Devyn Etling elected to return to the Ohio State roster for a fifth year in 2022. Green started his Ohio State career in 2018 while Etling has been with the program since 2017 when he received a medical redshirt.
  • Former Ohio State head coach John Bluem has been selected to join the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame, Class of 2022. Bluem posted 206 wins over 21 seasons (1997-2017) with 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the College Cup Final in…
