FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1. NEIL JONES ERA BEGINS – Head coach Neil Jones leads the Badgers into the 2022 college soccer season as the seventh head coach in Wisconsin men’s soccer history. Jones came to Madison this winter from Loyola Chicago, where he spent nine seasons and led the Ramblers to a pair of Missouri Valley Conference championships and the program’s first NCAA tournament victory. He’s also spent time as an associate head coach at Northwestern and as an assistant at his alma mater, UC-Santa Barbara. UCSB captured the 2006 NCAA title in his first year as an assistant coach.

Assistant coach Andrew Bordelon joins returning assistant Aaron Hohlbein on the sidelines. Chris Tadley also joins as a volunteer assistant directing the goalkeepers.

2. FIRST-GAME JITTERS – There hasn’t been many first-game jitters for Badger head coaches in their first games on the Wisconsin sidelines in program history. New coaches are 4-1-1 in Badger debuts all-time.

3. PLAYERS TO WATCH – Senior midfielders Inaki Iribarren and Ignasi Marques, as well as junior midfielder Tim Bielic, were named to the preseason Big Ten Players to Watch List on Monday.

4. ROSTER BREAKDOWN – A total of 10 newcomers will mix with 15 returners to make up the Badgers’ roster for 2022. The newcomers include graduate transfer defender Matt Chandler (St. John’s), as well as junior Maxwell Keenan (Western Michigan) and sophomore forward Mason Henderson (Indiana).

5. DOUBLE DOUBLEHEADERS – The Badger men and women play a pair of doubleheaders for the first four regular-season home games this fall for the two programs. Thursday, the women play host to Loyola Chicago at 5 p.m., before the men go at 8 p.m. against the Utah Tech Trailblazers.

Sunday it’s reversed, with the men opening at 1 p.m. against Tulsa, ranked in the preseason anywhere from 11 to 13 nationally. The Golden Hurricane were picked to win the American Athletic Conference.

The Badger women play at 4 p.m. against Green Bay at McClimon.
