Bruno Fernandes on ‘sad locker room’ as he is described as ‘biggest problem’ at Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes gesticulates as usual in Manchester United colours

Bruno Fernandes has described the atmosphere in the Manchester United changing-room on the same day as he has been fingered as the biggest issue at Manchester United.

United were utterly rotten in their opening two Premier League defeats to Brighton and Brentford, with Fernandes playing 90 minutes in both games.

Fernandes missed a gilt-edged chance v Brighton on the opening day and then against Brentford, he was so bad that the Manchester Evening News awarded him 1/10 in their player ratings.

He has scored only one Premier League goal since February.

United face Liverpool on Monday and Fernandes has denied that there is any discord among the Manchester United players.

“It’s a sad locker room, a bit dejected by the results. Expectations were high after the pre-season we had, but there is no problem in the dressing room, quite the opposite.

“The locker room knows it’s not at the level it needs to be. I need to look in the mirror and do better than I’ve been doing.”

One man who thinks that Fernandes can do much better is former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann.

He told the Daily Mirror: “I know the focus has been on (Cristiano) Ronaldo because he’s made it clear that he wants to leave the club, but where would United have been without his goals last season?

“Ronaldo is a big-game player, someone who can make a difference.

“For me, the biggest problem for Ten Hag is Bruno Fernandes. I can’t remember the last time I saw him do something other than wave his hands around in frustration.

“You can’t have players doing that in games against Liverpool. Everyone has to put a full shift in.”

Hamann has also reacted to Manchester United’s signing of Casemiro for an initial £60m, saying: “Casemiro is a great player – you only have to look at what he has won at Madrid.

“But he isn’t going to United to win the league, is he? We’re only two games into the season and it’s already obvious that United aren’t going to be anywhere near the title race.

“They are years behind Liverpool and Manchester City – and they are losing ground on Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal as well.

“Signing Casemiro is a small step forward – but he’s not the answer. It is going to take years and years of backing Erik ten Hag in the transfer market before United are challenging for the big trophies again.

“But that’s been obvious since [Sir Alex] Ferguson retired – and look at how many managers they have sacked in the process.”
