Sears’ Goal Gives Ohio State a 1-0 Win at Kansas – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team opened the 2022 season on a victorious note on Thursday evening, defeating Kansas 1-0 in Lawrence on the strength of a second-half goal by senior forward Emma Sears.

Sears scored nearly 15 minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie, and from there the Ohio State defense, led by starting goalkeeper Katherine Robinson, made it stand up. Robinson made three second-half saves and finished with five stops overall on the night.

How it Happened
The first half was evenly played between the two teams, at least on the scoresheet. The Buckeyes had a 6-5 edge in shots and each keeper made two saves.

In the 69th minute, however, Sears scored off an assist from Kailyn Dudukovich for what proved to be the decisive goal. In the next four minutes of game action, Robinson made two saves the preserve the one-goal lead.

Notes

  • Ohio State is 17-9-4 in season-openers and had not won a season-opener since 2017
  • This was the first meeting all-time between the two programs
  • OSU head coach Lori Walker-Hock was the first head coach in Kansas women’s soccer history. She led the Jawhawks in the 1995 and 1996 season before head to Ohio State. This was her first meeting against her old team.
  • Robinson, a 35-game veteran in her career at Pittsburgh, registered her ninth career shutout.
  • The contest was the first official regular season competition for an Ohio State program for the 2022-23 academic year.

The Buckeyes remain on the road and will take on Missouri this Sunday in Columbia. First touch is set for 12:05 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed (for a fee) on SEC Network+. This will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs.
