Five Points: Onto the Next

Gregg Berhalter: "I Thought Sean Johnson Played an Excellent Game."

August 18, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS)New York City FC News Release

New York City Football Club suffered a 3-1 defeat to Charlotte FC on Wednesday.

Here’s Five Points from a frustrating evening at Red Bull Arena.

Onto The Next

The trip to Chicago on Sunday is another chance to turn things around.

Last season’s frustrating run tested these players to their limits, and as Nick Cushing rightly said, they can draw from that experience during this current run of form. Everyone is confident things will turn around, and there’s nothing to suggest it won’t start on Sunday.

Chanot Spectacular

Maxime Chanot is more known for his defensive presence and physicality at the back, but on Wednesday he showed a beauty in the final third that was hard to believe.

His delightful drive from distance put NYCFC back on terms in spectacular fashion. It didn’t lead to a victory, but it was a memorable moment that the defender can be proud of.

Be A Goldfish

In the popular soccer tv show Ted Lasso, coach Lasso preaches his defender to ‘be like a goldfish’.

What he means by this is forget the mistakes and move forward. That’s what NYCFC must now do as they move toward Sunday’s game against Chicago Fire. Forget the past, focus on the future, and prepare for better days to come.

Keep Pushing

One thing that can’t be levelled at NYCFC is their desire to attack.

The Boys in Blue controlled possession and forced their opposition to sit back and soak up pressure. That control produced a number of promising opportunities, but sadly no further goals after Chanot’s strike.

NYCFC have a clear way of playing and while it would be easy to abandon that in the face of adversity, by showing commitment to their identity they will be rewarded eventually.

More Minutes

A penny for the thoughts of Anton Tinnerholm on Wednesday.

The Swedish defender was back on the scene of his devastating Achilles injury and was able to play the full 90 minutes. Tinnerholm is undoubtedly one of the best right backs in MLS, and his return gives NYCFC a pedigree and experience that can only be seen as beneficial.

The more minutes he plays the more rhythm he can build and that’s a major positive.
