Highly-rated City youngster to join Stoke on loan; 21-year-old defender set for Marseille

Man City youngster Liam Delap with Pep Guardiola

Manchester City striker Liam Delap is set to follow in the footsteps of his father by joining Stoke City for the season, according to reports.

The 19-year-old is thought of very highly at the club and there has been plenty of interest in him this summer.

Under contract until 2026, the Premier League champions had no intention of letting the young striker leave on a permanent basis.

Last month, City rejected a £16million bid from Southampton to sign Delap and it was reported last year that Borussia Dortmund had a £15m offer turned down.

The teenager made his senior debut against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup in September 2020 before making his first Premier League appearance against Leicester City three days later.

He was handed his first Champions League appearance in February, coming on for five minutes with City 5-0 up against Sporting Lisbon in their last 16 first leg.

In three matches this season, Delap has been an unused substitute once and left out of Pep Guardiola’s squad twice.

Delap follows in the footsteps of his father Rory, who played for Stoke between 2007 and 2013.

The 19-year-old travelled to the United States for City’s pre-season tour, but will now play in the Championship for regular senior football.

Another City youngster set to leave on loan is right-back Issa Kabore.

This is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who says the Burkina Faso international will join Ligue 1 side Marseille.

Unlike Delap, Kabore has a buy option included in the deal so will likely sign for the French outfit on a permanent basis if he impresses this season.

Romano reports that Marseille will have the opportunity to sign the young defender for €20m.

Medical tests are done and all documents are ready to be signed.

City have smartly included a buy-back option in the deal. It is not said how much they can purchase Kabore for in the future.

Kabore joined the Citizens for around £4m from KV Mechelen two years ago and was instantly loaned back to the Belgian club for the entirety of 2020/21.

He then spent last term with Ligue 1 club Troyes, where he impressed over the course of 31 league matches.
