New Red Bull Leipzig signing Timo Werner has insisted that he had a ‘good time in England’, despite struggling to impress at Chelsea following his £47.5million move to Stamford Bridge in 2020.

The German international completed his £25.3m return to Leipzig on Wednesday, having previously left Germany as the club’s all-time top scorer.

Werner netted 90 times in 157 appearances at Leipzig before his departure but he quickly saw his goal tally plummet in England, recording just 23 goals in 89 games during his two-year spell with Chelsea.

Despite attracting heaps of criticism and struggling to win over the Blues fans, the 26-year-old striker insisted that his time in the English capital was positive, claiming that he learned ‘a lot’ from the experience.

‘I’m really pleased to be back in Leipzig,’ he told the German club

‘The last 24 hours have been really exciting and it’s been a lot of fun to see so many familiar faces again.

‘I had a good time in England. I learnt a lot and got to know a new league.

‘At the same time, Leipzig developed a lot too. They’ve won a title and have the same high ambitions as Chelsea.’

Since his return, Leipzig have posted a video of his new team-mates playfully slapping Werner during training.

One player the German will be keen to reunite with is Leipzig attacking midfielder Christopher Nkunku, who played with Werner during his debut season at the club in 2019-20.
