PSV Progress in Extra-Time, Rangers Rally Past Union

PSV Eindhoven came from behind to claim a remarkable extra-time win over Monaco while Rangers also had a stirring triumph against Union SG in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Scottish runners-up Rangers had lost the first leg of the third qualifying round 2-0 to Union in Belgium but reversed that result spectacularly to progress, winning 3-0.

James Tavernier netted a penalty just prior to half-time, before second-half goals from Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman clinched the win.

Rangers’ win sees them book a playoff round clash with PSV, with the winner of the tie to play in the group stage proper.

Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst said: “We kept a clean sheet and just created as many chances as possible. This game needed a big performance and the players gave a big performance.”

PSV had their own challenges reaching the playoff round, having drawn the first leg with Monaco 1-1, before the French club impressed in Eindhoven to lead 2-1 with five minutes to play.

Joey Veerman had put PSV ahead early but Monaco hit back with second-half strikes from Guillermo Maripan and Wissam Ben Yedder to put themselves in the box seat.

But PSV leveled the game in the 89th minute from Erick Gutierrez to force extra-time, where Luuk de Jong struck a 109th minute winner.

Dynamo Kiev also moved through in extra-time with a 2-1 victory away to Sturm Graz, while Benfica eased past Midtjylland in the other league path tie.

In the champions path, Maccabi Haifa (Israel), Qarabag (Azerbaijan), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), Viktoria Plzen (Czech Republic), Bodo/Glimt (Norway) and Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) all progressed.
