Manchester United kicked while down as Romano confirms top target will join Leipzig

Reported Manchester United target Benjamin Sesko celebrates his goal

Manchester United target Benjamin Sesko will join RB Leipzig in 2023 with a deal set to be completed ‘this week’, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Red Bull Salzburg striker Sesko has been linked with the Red Devils in recent weeks, with Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Chelsea also believed to be interested.

Coventry City cancellation was an avoidable embarrassment for almost all concerned

The 19-year-old joined Salzburg from Slovenian outfit NK Domzale in 2019 and he has scored 12 goals in 39 games for the Austrian champions.

He is very high in demand and Erik ten Hag is believed to be prioritising the signing with Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford up in the air.

Manchester United football director John Murtough met with Sesko’s agent last week and planned for more talks to take place.

However, it has been reported by reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano that there will be no need for fresh discussions as the youngster has agreed to join Salzburg’s sister club, Leipzig.

The Bundesliga club were hoping to sign Sesko this summer but he will not join up with his new teammates until 2023.

The player is ‘happy’ to stay in Austria for another year and both clubs are expected to confirm the deal this week.

His Leipzig contract will run until 2028.

Sesko will not be Leipzig’s only signing this week with Chelsea forward Timo Werner close to re-joining the club.

Romano revealed that the German side will pay €20million plus add-ons for their former player.

Chelsea paid around £47m to sign Werner but he has struggled in front of goal during his time in west London.

The 26-year-old scored 23 times in 89 appearances and helped the Blues win the Champions League in 2020/21.

Another player who could be departing Chelsea is 21-year-old winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Sky Sports correspondent Dharmesh Sheth has reported that ‘up to 20 clubs’ are interested in signing the youngster, with Borussia Dortmund one of the teams in the race.
