Álvaro Barreal Named to the MLS Team of the Week

CINCINNATI – Álvaro Barreal has been named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 24, the league announced today. The honor is the first career league recognition for Barreal.

The 21-year-old earned a spot in the league’s weekly best XI as a defender for his contributions as FC Cincinnati’s starting left wing back against Philadelphia Union on Saturday. Barreal provided two goal contributions against the Union, setting up Brandon Vazquez’s opener in the 50th minute, followed by his seventh career MLS goal in the 71st minute.


The Argentine has assisted four goals in the last three games to catapult into a tie with Brandon Vazquez for the second-most career assists in club history (9) behind Luciano Acosta’s club record 23 assists.

FC Cincinnati have earned 17 spots on the league’s weekly Team of the Week this season, which surpasses 2019’s total of 16 weekly recognitions as the most in a single season in club history. Since FCC joined MLS in 2019, Barreal’s recognition is the 54th for the club on the MLS Team of the Week.

FC Cincinnati will be represented at the MLS All-Star Game for the first time in club history as Luciano Acosta and Brandon Vazquez head to Minnesota. The MLS All-Star Game kicks off at 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN/Univision) on Wednesday, August 10 from Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
