Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to leave their 1-1 friendly draw with Rayo Vallecano early was “unacceptable”.
Ronaldo, who is understood to want to leave United, was pictured exiting Old Trafford before half-time in the fixture having been substituted out at half-time.
The 37-year-old Portuguese was not alone and United had initially said that the players were permitted to depart early.
But new United boss ten Hag has revealed at a media day on Tuesday that he was not happy about their premature exits.
“It is unacceptable for everyone,” he told Viaplay Sport Netherlands.
“I am telling them it’s unacceptable. We are a team. A squad. Until the end we stay together.”
The club was made tricky given United played in Oslo against Atletico Madrid 24 hours before the Vallecano fixture.
However, ten Hag is understood to have wanted all members from that playing side present on Sunday, including eating together prior to the game.
The situation comes amid Ronaldo’s prolonged transfer saga, having been linked with Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.
None of those moves appear forthcoming for Ronaldo who wants to challenge for trophies and play in the UEFA Champions League in the twilight of his career.
Ronaldo also missed United’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia for “family reasons” but has been part of team training for the past week and a half.
