LAKELAND, Fla. – One of the Florida Tropics top two-way forwards has signed a new three-year deal with the Lakeland based team.
Kiel Williams — who has 100 points in 121 career Major Arena Soccer League regular season and playoff games – was a free agent at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season which saw the Tropics advance to the MASL championship series. Per league and team guidelines, no additional contract information will be released.
Last season, he totaled 15 points and 19 blocks in 20 regular season starts, while recording three goals in five playoff games. He had two hat tricks in the space of three starts last spring, one against the Harrisburg Heat and the other against his former team, the Kansas City Comets.
Coach Clay Roberts said much of the work Williams does is often not noticed.
“He was probably the most undervalued player on our team last year,” Roberts said. “He’s not a massive points person – but he can score, that’s for sure – but he plays such a great role. He gets up and down the field, he was on the man down unit at times, always on the sixth-attacker against at the end, because he knows the game and he’s smart. His willingness to do the work that is often times overlooked when we’re passing out accolades is something we very much value and appreciate.”
Williams started his career with the Kansas City Comets in the 2014-15 season, and was the Comets second leading score in 2019-20 before signing with Florida at the start of the 2020-21 season where COVID restrictions allowed him to make just one start.
“As a top franchise in the league, the Tropics are continuing to build something special, so I’m thankful for the opportunity to add to that. I look forward to sharing the field with the guys again,” Williams noted.
Kiel graduated from Park University where he was a starter as a freshman and was named team captain for his junior and senior years. In his final year with the Pirates, the Trinidad and Tobago (Point Fortin) native, was named AMC First-Team All-Conference after recording nine assists and six goals.
The Tropics – who advanced for the first-time in team history to the MASL championship finals last spring – will start their seventh season in the league this fall at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. For more information, visit www.fltropics.com.
