Juventus challenge Man Utd for £50m ‘jewel of Lazio’ as Pogba replacement

Juventus target midfielder

Juventus have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Lazio standout Sergej Milinkovic-Savic before the transfer window closes.

Erik ten Hag is keen to bolster his midfield ahead of his first season in charge of Man Utd.

Frenkie de Jong has been their main target this summer. They are set to make their ‘final bid’ for the midfielder. So this dull transfer saga may be ending soon, or at least we hope it is.

Placing Ten Hag on the Pep spectrum, and Man Utd moving on from De Jong

With deadline day now only a month away, it appears to have crossed United’s mind to look at alternatives to De Jong. How astute of them.

A player they reportedly have their eyes on is Milinkovic-Savic. It feels like the Lazio man has been linked with a move to the Premier League for as long as we all have lived.

The Serbia international is highly rated, and for good reason. He grabbed eleven goals and eleven assists in 37 Serie A outings last season.

Ex-Premier League striker Noel Whelan thinks Milinkovic-Savic would be a good signing for Man Utd:

“They’re saving themselves some money if they go for Milinkovic-Savic,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“There’s no point holding on for a player who doesn’t want to leave and come to your club. There are all sorts of financial issues – but you can’t hold on forever.

“You can’t just put your eggs in one basket – you need a plan B. There may be an opportunity to go back in for De Jong next summer because I think they’ll need two midfielders.

“They need this experience and quality.

“Milinkovic-Savic is definitely not a bad option to turn to, and it’s not breaking the bank in the grand scheme of things.”

It is not only Man Utd interested in Milinkovic-Savic, though. Juventus are also keen on him, according to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport.

In an update that was hard not to find funny, Pogba has picked up what seems to be a serious knee injury.

So Juventus have been forced into the market to sign a replacement. Milinkovic-Savic is among a number of targets, though Lazio’s asking price (£50m) is an ‘obstacle anything but easy to overcome’.

This means that Juventus signing him is ‘very difficult but not impossible’. PSG centre-midfielder Leandro Paredes is mentioned as a second target for the Serie A side.
