July 29, 2022 – Canadian Premier League (CPL)Atletico Ottawa News Release

Atlético Ottawa return home to a trying test as they host Hamilton’s Forge FC at TD Place for the first time this season on Sunday evening (KO 7 PM ET). Having already clashed twice at Tim Horton’s Field this season, Forge head coach Bobby Smyrniotis hasn’t been able to best Carlos González’s team so far, and the Atleti faithful will look to their team to keep it that way on Sunday.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Sunday’s kick-off.

Atlético Ottawa currently sit in a three-way tie in 1st place (second due to matches played and total wins) and are on a fine vein of form having not lost since June 19, 2022.

During this run, Atleti picked up their first-ever victory against Forge FC in a 1-0 courtesy of a stunning Ollie Bassett free-kick

Their opponents, Forge FC, leap-frogged Atleti on Wednesday evening to climb into first place with a 2-1 win over Cavalry FC.

Boasting an impressive defensive record, Ottawa have conceded only 5 goals in their past 10 games.

Of those five goals, only one was scored from open play (v Pacific FC – June 5, 2022). Before that, the last open play goal Atleti conceded was against Forge FC on May 14, 2022.

As well as this, goalkeeper Nathan Ingham has a league-leading seven clean sheets

Last time out, Atlético Ottawa recorded their first ever win against York United winning 3-0 at York Lions Stadium in front of a boisterous legion of away supporters.

With this victory, Atleti have now beaten every team in the CPL this season

Despite the three goals scored, it was another defensive performance that stood out with Drew Beckie, Maxim Tissot and Miguel Acosta all named to the CPL ‘Team of the Week’

Record head-to-head (all time): 1W-1D-6L; 2 goals scored, 15 goals conceded

Quotes

Carlos González, Atlético Ottawa Head Coach

“I’m looking for a game in which we can maintain the competitive level of our team, to make a tough game for them so that they aren’t comfortable in any moment and fight to our chances to win the game again. Since the start of the season, one of the targets of the team was to face any opponent with chances to beat them and I think that we are doing that and will continue to do that.”
