Chelsea offer RB Leipzig surprise swap to hijack £13m PSG deal for versatile defender

Chelsea are reportedly attempting to hijack Paris Saint-Germain’s move for RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele and are offering the Bundesliga side a player in exchange.

Mukiele has made 145 appearances for Leipzig since his £14.4m move from Montpellier in the summer of 2018 and has been capped once by France.

He plays predominantly at right-back, but can also play on the right of a back three, and is being lined up by Thomas Tuchel as a possible replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta, who wants to leave for Barcelona.

A report on Sunday claimed Leipzig had reached a £13m agreement with PSG for Mukiele’s transfer, leaving just the medical to complete.

But FootMercato journalist Santi Aouna now claims Chelsea are attempting to hijack that deal.

PSG are said still to be confident of completing the deal for Mukiele, but the Blues are hoping they can persuade the German side to listen to their offer, which could include their former striker Timo Werner.

That would be something of a surprise given Werner is worth nearly twice as much as Mukiele, according to Transfermarkt.

But it may well be sanctioned by Tuchel, who was irked by Werner’s claim that he “could be happy everywhere” when asked about his future, as long as he plays and scores goals.

Tuchel insisted the Germany international should be delighted to be at Chelsea and that he needs to “show quality” to earn and keep his place in the starting XI.

“I’m surprised,” Tuchel said when asked about Werner’s comments. “I would be very happy as a young guy having a contract at Chelsea Football Club. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet.”

“So he needs to get his game time,” Tuchel then replied when told Werner was concerned about lack of game time. “Show quality, take your place and defend your place. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet having a contract with Chelsea. If he said this, I do not understand.”
