Man Utd prepare ‘proposal’ for midfield alternative after ‘sudden halt’ in De Jong deal

Man Utd target Frenkie de Jong runs with the ball at his feet

Man Utd are interested in bringing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Old Trafford if they fail in their attempts to land Frenkie de Jong, according to reports in Italy.

The Red Devils have been chasing a deal for the Barcelona midfielder for over two months now with numerous different reports about why a deal is taking so long.

Initially, Man Utd and Barcelona were struggling to agree a fee but over the last week they have settled on a deal worth €85m.

However, there have been reports De Jong doesn’t want to move to Man Utd, while others claim it’s the £17m owed to De Jong in deferred wages and bonuses, from during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is delaying a transfer.

And, with Man Utd unsure whether they will be able to get a deal over the line for De Jong, they could now turn to other targets like Milinkovic-Savic.

Lazio Siamo Noi claims that Milinkovic-Savic is ‘back in fashion’ at Old Trafford and his ‘agent could soon deliver a proposal’ from Man Utd to Lazio.

Milinkovic-Savic’s future is said to now be ‘closely linked’ with De Jong’s after United’s attempts to take him to Manchester have ‘suffered a sudden halt’.

Man Utd believe Milinkovic-Savic would be ‘a level alternative’ to the Dutchman with ‘new developments on the Milinkovic-United affair are expected in the evening’.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag –  who worked with De Jong during his time at Ajax – insists that Man Utd must bring in more new faces this summer after securing deals for Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

Ten Hag told reporters: “We signed Eriksen for the midfield department, so we are really happy with that. And yes, I am really happy also with our performances of our midfield department and offensive department at this moment.

“So we have to strengthen the squad even more and we are looking around but we also need the right players.

“There is a reason in a number of games you…
