Stanway wonder strike in extra-time sends Lionesses through to Euros semi-finals

England beat Spain

Georgia Stanway’s sensational extra-time winner sends Sarina Wiegman’s England through to the semi-finals of the European Championships.

The Lionesses scored 14 goals and did not concede in the group stages to top Group A. Spain meanwhile finished second in Group B to set a tie in the quarter-finals against the host nation.

La Roja were not at their best prior to the knockout rounds but they were the better side up until the interval. England striker Ellen White had a goal disallowed before half-time as she was flagged for offside.

England made a bright start after the restart but it was Spain who deservedly took the lead in the 54th minute.

Athenea del Castillo got away from Rachel Daly on the flank before she played in Gonzalez. The forward controlled it before she smartly found the bottom corner with her shot.

Wiegman’s team pushed for an equaliser and their hard work paid off in the 84th minute. Alessia Russo’s cross was eventually bundled home by Ella Toone.

The game went to extra-time and England completed their comeback in the 96th minute. Stanway advanced towards Spain’s goal before she unleashed a fierce strike that flew into the top corner.

England were made to ride out some tense moments before the final whistle, but they did just that to book their place in the semi-finals.

They will battle it out with Sweden or Belgium next Tuesday at Bramall Lane over a place in the final on July 31 at Wembley.
