Rangers are on the brink of signing defender Ben Davies for £4million from Liverpool.

The Ibrox club moved to secure the Englishman as a direct replacement for Calvin Bassey, with the Nigeria international arriving in Amsterdam to finalise his £20m move to Ajax.

Davies, 26, had numerous options south of the border but jumped at the chance to move to Scotland after failing to make the breakthrough at Anfield after joining last summer.

Having come through the system at Preston North End, he had loan spells at York, Tranmere, Southport, Newport County and Fleetwood.

Linked with Celtic a year ago, he moved to Liverpool for £500,000 but couldn’t establish himself under Jurgen Klopp. Davies (pictured) played 23 games while on loan at Sheffield United last term but has now agreed to put down roots by signing a long-term deal with Rangers.

It’s understood Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Stoke and Burnley were all in the running for his signature. The capture of Davies comes after Giovanni van Bronckhorst secured the services of John Souttar, Antonio Colak, Tom Lawrence, Malik Tillman and Rabbi Matondo.

The Dutchman’s squad revamp has already seen Cedric Itten, Leon Balogun and Joe Aribo move out the door, with Bassey poised to join them in a deal which will smash the club’s existing record £12m fee for Nathan Patterson. Tillman, the 20-year-old midfielder who has joined on loan from Bayern Munich, has set his sights on starring in the World Cup at the end of this year.

Although born in Germany, he made his first appearance for the USA earlier this year on account of his American father.
