Man Utd ‘evaluate’ Bundesliga star as Ten Hag eyes second centre-back after €55m Ajax man

Man Utd tarrget Felix Uduokhai

According to reports, Man Utd are ‘evaluating’ a move for Bundesliga star Felix Uduokhai this summer as the club want two centre-backs.

Erik ten Hag has become United’s manager ahead of next season. They have already brought in Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.

The Red Devils are also set to announce the signing of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax for €55m.

Are we about to discover that Joel Glazer was right all along about Man Utd’s Pele?

Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (via Sport Witness) are reporting that United want to bring in a second new centre-back.

Udiokhai is being ‘evaluated’ by Man Utd with them attempting to ‘further armour their rearguard’.

The report notes that Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have also shown interest in him in recent months.

The Germany U21 international signed for FC Augsburg permanently in 2020 for around €9m.

His 2021/22 campaign was hampered by injuries as he was only able to start eight times in the league.

Elsewhere, Ten Hag has been encouraged to find someone “with better quality” than Scott McTominay.

The centre-midfielder was among the United players criticised last term. They underperformed as they finished sixth in the Premier League.

The Red Devils fought back from behind to beat Melbourne Victory on Friday in their second pre-season friendly

McTominay got on the scoresheet against Melbourne Victory and he also made an appearance as United beat Liverpool 4-0 earlier this week.

Mikael Silvestre played over 350 times for United between 1999 and 2008. He thinks there are players who “should come ahead” of McTominay next season:

“I think he [McTominay] had a difficult season, like most of the team,” Silvestre told Lord Ping (quotes via The Daily Star).

“I think he has enough qualities to feature for Manchester United and a solid servant for the club from the Academy.

“In terms of top quality midfield players? There are other players in the market that should come ahead of him, however into a rotation he can definitely add value.

“Scott can be a starter but ideally you want someone with better quality in the middle of the park to bring the team into contention for the top spot in the Premier League.”
