Ronaldo agents ‘impressed’ by Manchester United chief as options across Europe fade

Cristiano Ronaldo applauds Manchester United fans

The agents of Ronaldo are making their first steps to heal the relationship with Manchester United fans by letting it be known that they are ‘impressed’ with the club’s chief executive.

The Times journalist Duncan Castles – who has long had a strong relationship with Jorge Mendes – claims that Richard Arnold ‘is working to persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to withdraw his request to leave the club after Erik ten Hag declared the forward unsellable’.

Arnold has apparently given permission for Mendes to tout Ronaldo among Champions League clubs while simultaneously making it clear that he wants him to stay at Manchester United for the last year of his contract.

This has seemingly ‘impressed’ Ronaldo’s camp, who coincidentally are struggling to find a club who want to match his Manchester United wages. New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was keen but coach Thomas Tuchel has been insistent on choosing his own transfer targets and does not want the Ronaldo circus at his door.

This latest report appears to open the door to Ronaldo staying at Manchester United, though the more likely scenario is that he wishes to leave the club but wants to retain his standing among the fans.

‘According to friends, Ronaldo’s affection and respect for United’s supporters remains as strong as ever. In addition to wanting to leave on sporting grounds, however, there are personal reasons for leaving Manchester after a difficult period for his family following the death during childbirth of his son.’

Coach Erik ten Hag addressed the rumours for the first time on Monday while on pre-season tour, saying: “I have read [that he wants to leave], but what I say is Cristiano is not for sale. He is in our plans and we want success together. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

It is thought that the pair have not spoken for several weeks, with Ten Hag having really no choice but to say that he wants him to stay at the club. Any public statement that Ronaldo could leave has to come from the player or his agents.

It does leave Manchester United desperately needing to replace his goals.
