Cushing Reaction: “We’re Happy with the Win.”

Gregg Berhalter: "I Thought Sean Johnson Played an Excellent Game."

July 9, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS)New York City FC News Release

New York City Football Club Interim Head Coach Nick Cushing was pleased to see his side return to winning ways on Saturday afternoon.

The Boys in Blue ran out 4-2 victors against New England Revolution on Saturday. Goals from Talles Magno, Gabriel Pereira, and a brace from Taty Castellanos secured three points and a first win under Cushing’s guidance. Speaking after the game, the 37-year-old confirmed he was happy with the result and his side’s creativity in the final third.

“We’re happy to get the win,” he said. “For us it was about getting back to winning ways at home. We have a really good record here at Yankee Stadium. Obviously drawing the previous two games here, even though we thought we played well, we wanted to get back to winning ways. We’re really happy with the performance today. We created a lot of chances – maybe we could have scored more goals – but to score four goals at home and take a win, we’re really happy with that.”

Cushing also took time to praise several of the young players on the roster after another strong showing from Tayvon Gray and a cameo from Justin Haak. The midfielder, a native of Brooklyn, has made several strong substitute appearances of late and Cushing was keen to commend the role the young players have in impacting the team and their results.

“I believe in young players,” he said. “I believe that here in New York we have some real talent in our academy and that shows with the likes of Tayvon Gray, Justin Haak, Andres Jasson. The only way we’re going to improve them is through working hard on the training pitch and then trusting them in games. We did that in Cincinnati and Justin showed he can play in this team. He is a valued member of this team, and I think if we need him he can come into games if Nicolás Acevedo or Alfredo Morales gets tired we can bring him in and I thought he was really good today. We are responsible for pushing him and creating another Homegrown product for New York City.”
