Chelsea ‘tracking’ £17.5m Burnley man

Reported Chelsea target Maxwel Cornet during a match

Chelsea could make a move for Burnley forward Maxwel Cornet if they miss out on other players in his position, according to reports.

The Ivory Coast international impressed for the Clarets last term, scoring nine times in 26 Premier League encounters.

Due to his participation in the African Cup of Nations as well as injury problems, the 26-year-old struggled to perform during the run-in as his side were relegated to the Championship.

The club’s relegation means that Cornet is available for £17.5million this summer due to a clause in his contract becoming active after Burnley lost their top-flight status.

Following the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign, it was reported that Everton and West Ham are both ‘looking’ to trigger the former Lyon man’s release clause.

According to The Athletic, Burnley have ‘had conversations with Premier League clubs’ interested in signing Cornet.

Chelsea are ‘tracking’ the versatile forward but are unlikely to make a move unless they fail to land any of their top targets.

The Blues have had a bid accepted by Leeds United for their winger Raphinha, but the Brazilian is believed to be holding out for a move to Barcelona.

The La Liga club’s forward, Ousmane Dembele, has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge with his Barca contract officially expired, though he is more likely to pen a fresh deal in Catalonia.

‘Burnley have not ruled out keeping Cornet’, the report adds.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich are ‘confident’ they can land Juventus’ Matthijs de Ligt but do not want to be drawn into a bidding war with Chelsea, according to the Evening Standard.

Chelsea are very keen on the centre-half with the player open to a move after making it clear he will not extend his Juventus contract which ends in 2024.

The report claims that the Blues ‘could face serious competition’ from Bundesliga champions Bayern.

Bayern first tried to sign the 22-year-old from Ajax in 2019 but are now ‘confident’ they can beat the Londoners to the signature of the player.
