GREELEY, Colo. – After taking a 4-1 defeat in Chattanooga last month, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC were looking for some redemption against the Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. There was no love lost in the last meeting between these two clubs, with 10 yellow cards issued in the match. That trend continued this evening with six and a red between both teams.
Chances came early for both sides. Hailstorm had the first shot in the sixth minute when Jerry Desdunes sent a cross in for Trevor Amann, but it was put just over the crossbar. Chattanooga a few minutes later had a chance to make it 1-0 but Thomas Olsen made what can be another Save of the Week candidate and pushed the shot wide of the mark.
In the 20th minute, Northern Colorado finally broke down the Red Wolves’ defense and found the net. Some quick one touch passing between Irvin Parra, Danny Robles, and Desdunes gave Robles a clear look at goal from the edge of the area and he buried it for his second goal of the season. Almost 15 minutes later Brecc Evans doubled the Hailstorm lead with an assist from Arthur Rogers. A free kick from Rogers found Evans at the back post to slot it home.
“I can only thank the gaffer for giving me confidence with the free kicks and things like my service. They instill confidence in me. Then the boys, they show desire every set piece, it’s dangerous, we always get our head on it,” said Rogers.
The Red Wolves had much of the momentum in the first portion of the second half. It was at the hour mark when Chattanooga brought themselves back into the game. A free kick was given deep in the Hailstorm side of the pitch, the Red Wolves took the kick quickly and were able to pass the ball past Olsen.
Northern Colorado strengthened their defense after the goal and were able to see out the win. The Hailstorm have now picked up eight points from their first four home games and remain unbeaten in the state of Colorado.
“Eight from four is a good record, we want to continue that,” said head coach Éamon Zayed. “The main focus is to remain unbeaten at home. I want to say thank you to UNC, because we have enjoyed using their facility. I’m going to miss it. But now we’re on to CSU and hopefully that will be our advantage and we’ll make that a fortress as well.”
