Red Bulls Advance to U.S. Open Cup Semifinals with 3-0 Victory over New York City FC

– The New York Red Bulls defeated New York City FC 3-0 to advance to the Semifinals of the 2022 U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 22, at Red Bull Arena.

– New York opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, as Tom Edwards sent in a free kick that was headed down by Aaron Long at the edge of the box. The ball fell to Lewis Morgan, who flicked it into the net.


– The Red Bulls doubled their lead in the 70th minute, as Patryk Klimala had an initial shot attempt saved by New York City FC, and Luquinhas gathered the rebound, maneuvered around the keeper, and ripped a shot into the far corner.

– In second half stoppage time, New York added another goal to seal the win. Steven Sserwadda played a ball down the near side of the field and Cameron Harper made a run to retrieve it. Harper sent in a cross that was finished by Omir Fernandez.

– The match set a record for attendance in an Open Cup match at Red Bull Arena at 12,575.

– New York will advance to the semifinals for the sixth time in club history and the first time since 2017.

– The Red Bulls are 3-0-1 in their last four matches across all competitions against NYCFC, outscoring them 6-1. This includes three-straight clean sheets.

– Morgan’s goal was his second in U.S. Open Cup play and his ninth this season across all competitions, which is the team lead.

– It also marked the 16th of his career across all competitions.
